No Hibernation for Me!

"Milkweed" poem placard hanging from a tree in Burlington's 2025 Poem Path

One of my micro-poems on the 2025-26 Intervale Poem Path in Burlington, VT

Our granddaughter attends a wonderful preschool. Last week they learned about animals that hibernate, migrate, or slow down to a state called “torpor” during the cold Vermont winters. For me, it’s none of the above. I love fresh snow & being outdoors in cold temps. And the winter of 2026 has been a doozy so far! I’ve been winter hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Just as much fun is seeing some of my poems hanging on tree-trunks and suspended between branches. All in peaceful snowscapes in and around Burlington.

In Burlington’s Intervale, on a wooded section of the Calkins Trail, you can read two of my micro-poems on the Poem Path, along with 18 others celebrating the solace & hope we find in nature. Many thanks to the volunteer staff of. Burlington Writers Workshop for creating this canopy of words, and to the Burlington Parks & Rec department that supports the annual installation.

My poem “Camouflage” was included in Winterdeep 2026, a magical outdoor lighted walking path in Shelburne, VT. You can hear bits of it in the video, giving you a sense of how the poems emerge on the lantern-lit path. Hand-warmers, toe-warmers & the company of friends made this year’s display such an awe-filled experience. Plus it raises funds for the creators: the rich educational & musical presentations of Treewild.
